Asian Pacific American Coalition will host 'Awakenings 2002' tomorrow at BJC.
From the many faces of Asian and Asian-American heritage draws an event that will wake up Penn State this weekend.
The Asian Pacific American Coalition will kick off April's celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with Awakenings 2002, a cultural extravaganza collaborating song and dance.
"It a show with modern and traditional song dances and skits," said Vicky Leung, president of APAC. "Our theme is 'Individually Unique; Together Complete.'"
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month will bring more events celebrating Asian culture throughout the month.
The month-long festival seeks to reach out to all students at Penn State, not just Asian students, said Leung.
"Our main goal is to educate others of our heritage -- to reflect our Asian heritage as well as our Asian American side of our identity," she said. "Within the Asian culture, there are a lot of ethnic groups."
Those other cultures are reflected in the diversity within APAC. Groups participating in the month-long celebration span across Penn State's array of Asian clubs on campus: including Hui Hawaii, Indian, Korean Undergraduate, Pakistan, Taiwanese American, the Vietnamese Student Associations and Penn State Filipino Association,.
"A lot of our organizations are performing," Lueng said. Other events this month include several banquets, a Powderpuff football and a three-on-three basketball tournament.
At 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Lambda Phi Epsilon and Alpha Kappa Delta Phi bring the 7th annual Mr. and Ms. Asian Penn State pageant to Heritage Hall. All proceeds of the pageant will go to the American Diabetes Association.
Awakenings 2002 will commence at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the South Annex of The Bryce Jordan Center. Admission is free.
