Minogue's album spreads an upbeat 'Fever'

Collegian Staff Writer

It's easy to understand why Kylie Minogue's Fever was a smash overseas, but now it seems as though many in the U.S. are starting to get sick with the same Fever. At least those who are major techno or disco fans or just people who like to dance will be impressed with this album.

When I first purchased this album, I thought I was buying a second "Loco-Motion"-sounding CD. I was actually surprised at what a good album she put out.

While Minogue hasn't had a hit over here since her 1988 "Loco-Motion" single, this new sound is quite refreshing.

The entire album is extremely upbeat and I found my foot taping along to the beat while fighting the urge to get up and dance. The techno/disco beat of the tracks is one aspect that makes this dance album so successful.

This isn't an album that is going to be bought for an underlying deep meaning in the artist's songs or for wonderful vocals, but for those who like to dance and listen to not-so-emotionally-draining music, this is a great pick.

Girls and boys who just got dumped beware, there's not a single slow song on the entire album for you to cry to while you listen. Even those tracks with lyrics that would easily fit a slower melody follow a faster beat.

Disco, still a popular type of music overseas, may be making a comeback here in the States -- beginning with this album.

Not everybody gets excited about the resurgence of Flashdance-type music, but for those who love to dance under disco balls are in luck.

Of course, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is perhaps the best song on this CD, but others like "More More More" and "Come into my World" are also very successful in combining a beat to go along with Minogue's diva-like pop voice.

And while some of us may be disappointed that there's not a reprise of "Loco-Motion" on the track list, there's enough good songs on the album to make up for it. In fact, there's not one bad song on Fever.

Sure, there are songs you will play more than others, but there are not any songs you will majorly dislike -- if you like disco and techno music.

Since the '70s are coming back again fashion-wise, I guess it's only reasonable to have them come back musically.

Disco and techno may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I think most will enjoy the ABBA mixed with pop feel of this album.
