Today's University Park forecast
partly cloudy After a beautiful day on Thursday, clouds and periods of rain will move in from west to east late in the day in response to a cold front pushing eastward from the Great Lakes. The weekend will not be a washout though, as sunshine returns late Saturday and hangs tough for the first part of the work week. Temperatures will not fluctuate too much throughout the period and will remain slightly above seasonal averages.

On This Date In... 1989

Thunderstorms produced torrential rains in northeastern Texas and southwestern Arkansas on March 29, 1989. Longview, TX recorded 14.16 inches of rain.
The collapse of a dam in Henderson, TX from over eleven inches of rain left people stranded in trees. In dramatic fashion, the flood victims had to be rescued by boat. Total storm damage in northeastern Texas was estimated at 10 to 16 million dollars.

Current Weather Highlight

Last week climate scientists reported the collapse of the Larsen B Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The Larsen B contains 720 billion tons of ice and broke apart after 50 years of sharply warming temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula. Senior Researcher, Tim Naish from New Zealand, warns that the Larsen’s collapse could indicate the overall instability of Antartica’s largest ice shelf, which is roughly the size of France. If average global temperatures continue to rise, many more ice shelfs could become vulnerable.
