WEATHER
[ Thursday, March 28, 2002 ]

Today's University Park forecast
mostly sunny Sunny skies and seasonably mild temperatues will make a return to Happy Valley today as a high pressure system slides to the southeast of the region. This period of tranquil weather will be short-lived, however, as a disturbance moves to our north, bringing cloudy skies and the chance of showers through early Saturday. Conditions should improve late in the day on Saturday, as a high pressure system moves in from the west. The weekend should end on a pleasant note Sunday, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures.

On This Date In... 1984

Severe weather turned deadly for many people in the Carolinas. A late afternoon and early evening outbreak of 22 tornadoes across these two states claimed the lives of 57 people and injured another 1248. A large majority of the victicms were trapped in their moblie homes, which were no match for these powerful s\orms. One report claimed a tornado with a width of 2.5 miles was spotted between Tatum, SC and Cumberland County, NC.

Current Weather Highlight

Although it seemed this was the year without snow here in St. College, this wasn’t the case in Marquette, MI. Since October, this town in the upper peninsula of Michigan has received 299.2 inches of snow as of yesterday. Their average snowfall amount by this date is 153.6 inches, or just over half of what has fallen this year. The likely cause of this abnormally large snowfall is the unfrozen waters of Lake Superior, resulting in heavy lake-effect snowfalls throughout this past winter season.
