University cannot give holidays for all religions
Yesterday Karen Thyng wrote that the university should find some way to provide a holiday on Monday so Christian students can go home on Sunday and enjoy their Easter without worrying about getting back to school on Monday. This sounds nice, we certainly all want people to be able to enjoy holidays with their families. Nevertheless, we cannot have a vacation for every Christian holiday without giving other religions and belief systems the same consideration. Passover starts at sundown Wednesday. Should Jews not show up to classes for the remainder of Passover? How about Chanukah or Yom Kippur? What about Islamic holidays, Hindu holidays, Greek Orthodox Easter (which doesn't always fall when other Christians' Easter falls)? How about Zoroastrians? All right, there are few Zoroastrians on our campus, but the point is we cannot discriminate between religions, all holidays should be vacations (which would be impossible) or none of them should be (which is clearly more functional). It should be enough that Christmas break is centered around a Christian holiday (we are generally still in school during Chanukah). Phil Schwadel
