My Opinion
Lady Lions deserving
of more support

Where were you on March 15? How about March 17 or 23? Maybe you were at the bar. The 17th was St. Patrick's Day and maybe on the 15th you started drinking the Michigan State-colored beer early.

Maybe you were relaxing, hoping your hangover would go away or that the dog-faced member of the opposite sex to your right would take the walk of shame before he or she could realize you were actually awake and just closing your eyes until he or she left. Maybe you were doing work. No, let's be serious. Most of you don't work on any days that start with letters other than m, t or w.

I know what you probably were not doing. You probably were not watching women's basketball. Specifically, you probably were not watching your own classmates make an inspiring run in the NCAA Tournament. You probably thought, "Well, it is women's basketball and it is not as exciting as the men's game."

If you missed it, and I'm sure most of you did, here are some of the highlights you did not see and may never see again. You missed an incredible come-from-behind first-round Lady Lions victory that saw a five-point first-half deficit obliterated. You missed quite possibly the most explosive offensive performance from a Penn State team all year. You missed Kelly Mazzante drill three pointers from halfway between the half-court line and three-point stripe. You missed Tanisha Wright make sick moves that would make Allen Iverson jealous.

What's worse about missing those games is that they were at home. The Lions played well enough to host the opening rounds of the tournament and most of you students did not take the two hours to reward them for their efforts by going to the game. The funny thing is that the crowd was still ruckus, giving the team an advantage over Tennessee-Chattanooga and Florida International. However, if more students had come, the team could have had an overwhelming advantage.

So who was cheering during those two games? Alumni, children from the surrounding area, people from players' hometowns (like Mazzante's Montoursville) and a few committed and proud students. These were the same people that rode a bus for 13 hours to follow the Lions and give them fuel that they would need to have a chance to beat No. 1 Connecticut. Sadly, there were at most three students on a bus that contained 40 people, who instead consisted of Cager Club Members, alumni and Rashana Barnes' grandmother.

Now I understand why people may not have come to Milwaukee. Thirteen hours on a bus, may not be ideal for you. But how many of you actually flipped on ESPN to watch Rene Portland lead her troops against maybe the best women's hoops team ever? How many of you were watching men's NCAA basketball later on that day? Maybe you think that men's basketball is more exciting. Well, chew on this for a second. More of you students came and cheered on the men's team in a regular-season loss to Michigan State last year than came to the second round of the women's tournament this season. It was a more important game and the men's team was done playing at this time too.

And if you think that Penn State men's basketball is always more exciting to watch than women's basketball then think about this: Mazzante hits longer shots than Crispin ever made and she does it more consistently, and Wright's moves easily rival the ones made by Titus Ivory last season.

I'm sure the Lions thank everyone that came to all the home games this season. The students that came did a great job of cheering and helped the young Lions learn what playing at home is all about. However, I'm also sure these women would applaud even more if a larger percent of the 40 some thousand of you came out to support the team next year. They'll thank you for cheering on a team that will be good enough to challenge for the Final Four.
