In her Thompson Hall bedroom, freshman Bethany Cynthia Smith was found lifeless at 2:30 a.m. yesterday. Smith, 18, was pronounced dead less than an hour later, but the cause of death has yet to be determined, Penn State Police Services said.

The Lady Lions (23-12) played an inspired first half of basketball on Saturday but could not pull off an upset, losing to No. 1 Connecticut, 82-64, in the Mideast Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

On Saturday in the U.S. Cellular Arena, the Connecticut women's basketball team used 6-foot-2 senior forward Tamika Williams as the acid that slowly ate away at Penn State's chance to advance to the Elite 8.

At times during the 2001-02 Penn State women's basketball season, Kelly Mazzante has single-handedly dominated entire teams with her outstanding play. Mazzante has been a one-woman wrecking crew for the Lady Lions, breaking records and setting the Big Ten on fire with highlight-reel shots.

Riding impressive performances all across the board, the fencers overcame an early defeat yesterday to claim the NCAA National Championship at Drew University. The final score was Penn State 195, St. John's 190 and Notre Dame 186.

Iowa State 197-pounder Cael Sanderson finished his four-year career on Saturday at the NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y. with an unprecedented career record of 159-0.

Minnesota tallied 126.5 points, followed by an Iowa State team with three individual champions and 104 points, while Oklahoma finished third with 101.5 points. Iowa finished fourth with 89 points.

The Nittany Lions placed third with a score of 214.600 at the championship held this weekend at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Instead of cannons bursting it ended more like a popgun going off. Lofty expectations gave way to disappointment.

The squad finished last out of the seven teams competing with a score of 192.550, its lowest of the season.

With the beginning of the Big Ten season just a week away, the members of the Penn State baseball team talked a lot about gaining momentum in this weekend's games against Navy.

The No.2 Tige rs (5-1) used a feisty defense and made loose ball-Princeton ball, as they rolled over the No. 12 Penn State women's lacrosse team (3-3) 17-8 at Holuba Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The Penn State men's lacrosse team fell Saturday to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) 9-8 despite mounting a late comeback scoring two goals within the last 34 seconds.

The No. 14 Loyola Ramblers (15-5) upset the No. 5 Nittany Lions (17-3) Friday in five games (30-27, 26-30, 30-27, 22-30, 15-9), bringing an end to Penn State's longest winning streak since 1997.

The Lions went 4-2 at the Hoo's Who Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia. Penn State won four of the six games it played in the tournament.

In their first playoff game of the spring season, the Lady Ruggers routed the Delaware Blue Hens 54-3 by relying on basics and dominating ball possession and tempo.

Going into the match, the Penn State (7-8, 0-3) men's tennis team knew the odds were severely stacked against them. Unfortunately, they were not able to pull off the upset.
