Lions break records
at Virginia tournament

For The Collegian

There is an old saying in sports that makes the claim that records are meant to be broken.

The Penn State softball team tried its hardest to live up to that saying this past weekend.

The Lions went 4-2 at the Hoo's Who Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia. Penn State won four of the six games it played in the tournament. It swept Wright State on Friday with wins of 4-1 and 10-0 and then had another undefeated day on Saturday, defeating Drexel 5-1 and 13-5. The only losses for the Lions came yesterday, as they lost to host Virginia 4-2 and 5-2.

During the trio of doubleheaders over the weekend, the Lions set or tied four school records.

In the second game against Wright State on Friday, the Lions established a team record by collecting 22 hits. Following a 4-1 victory in the first game, the Lions used the record-setting performance to crush the Raiders 10-0. For three players this would be a game of firsts. Sophomore catcher Erica Greenberg hit one of the three home runs by the Lions, her first in a Penn State uniform. Also, freshman first baseman Steph Viola and freshman second baseman Gloria Yablonsky recorded their first hits while wearing the blue and white for Penn State. This offensive explosion would carry over to the second day of the tournament when the Lions took on Drexel.

Penn State beat the Dragons 5-1 in the first game, which would be a warm-up for the later game in which three athletes would tie team records in a 13-5 romp. Junior outfielder Gina Bianchini had a standout game, as she would tie two team records after recording four hits and scoring four runs in the game.

Bianchini would share the record-tying hit performance with freshman shortstop Mandy Nuxoll, who also crossed the plate three times in the game. Those two would not have scored without help and that help came from senior third baseman Jennifer Tripken.

Tripken helped Penn State post the most runs it has scored in a game since an April 2000 win against Wisconsin. She tied a school record with five RBIs and her eight RBIs on the weekend increased her team-leading total to 22 on the season.

No doubt the offensive outburst by the team took a huge load off of the pitchers' shoulders this weekend.

Team ace Marisa Hanson went 2-1 on the weekend as she continues to dominate the competition. The sophomore has allowed just six earned runs in 67.2 innings this season.

Hanson would not be the only bright spot for the Lions in the mound.

Freshman hurlers Missy Beseres and Shana Riggleman complimented Hanson throughout the tournament. Riggleman got the win in the 10-0 game on Friday as she and Beseres combined for the three-hit shutout.

Beseres would post the victory in the second game rout of Drexel on Saturday. Hanson finished the weekend with a 6-5 record while Riggleman and Beseres ended at 2-1 and 4-2, respectively.

The Lions' luck ran out on Sunday when they took on host Virginia. Penn State dropped both games to the Cavaliers, 4-2 and 5-2. Errors hurt the Lions as they recorded six miscues over the two games.

The Lions reached 12-11 on Saturday to go above .500 for the first time all season but ended the weekend with a 12-13 record heading into their first home game of the season against St. Joseph's this Wednesday.
