Dorms need sprinklers so cost must be raised

Tuesday's editorial questions the necessity of the 6.8 percent increase in room and board rates for next year.

I'd like to point out that the increase is essential if Penn State's housing and food services are ever going to be up to the students' (and their parents') standards. Dorm sprinklers are necessary, period. Have people already forgotten about the Seton Hall dorm fire that claimed the lives of 3 freshmen two years ago?

Every day that passes without sprinklers in dorm rooms is another day the university is putting students' lives at risk. In light of the Seton Hall tragedy, I'd assume that most people would understand the hike in the rate once they see where the majority of that money is going. People need to remember that this very costly project is not only taking place in University Park dormitories but in all of the commonwealth campus dorms as well.

As for the need for renovations and expansions to the dining commons areas, I say, "go for it!" These improvements are crucial in bringing the dining environment as well as the food up to par. I did my time in the dorms; I know what it's like to wait in long lines for not-so-great food every night.

Dining commons are overcrowded during peak hours, and the food isn't exactly the healthiest stuff out there. Enhancing the quality of the dining hall experience would benefit students who eat there by reducing stress levels and improving their diets. I think most students consider eating to be a necessity and won't be complaining about the rate increase once they experience shorter lines and decent food.
