They came in their best, cheered on the winners, laughed at Whoopi's wit, dined among friends and worked the red carpet.
More than fifty students attended No Refund Theater's and Association of Resident Hall Students' first Oscar night celebration held last night in Heritage Hall.
"If you're going to go, go all the way," said Adam Kapp (senior-English and psychology) who came in a tux.
Kapp said his favorite part of the Academy Awards is Joan Rivers bashing the stars' fashion sense. Kapp did some bashing of his own; he was especially disappointed in Ananda Lewis's outfit. "I give her high points for creativity but a low score for technical merit," Kapp said of Lewis, who interviewed attendees of the show as they made their way down the red carpet.
Fashion was also the highlight of the night for Caryn Piorkowski (junior-theatre) who hopes to have a career in costume design. Piorowski predicted that Moulin Rouge would win Best Costume Design because "I know what goes into making the costumes and Moulin Rouge has the most difficult." Piorowski's prediction was correct -- Moulin Rouge took the Oscar.
During the commercial breaks, NRT members performed two-minute improvisational skits on the five films nominated for Best Picture A Beautiful Mind, Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings and Moulin Rouge.
Nate Kushner (senior-English), complete in a tweed blazer, spoofed Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind. Kushner said he thinks he did Crowe justice in his performance titled "A Hideous Mind". He called the experience "the most amazing thing ever."
There was also a prediction contest for Oscar winners. The best predictor received a $75 gift certificate to Target; the worst predictor received a $25 Target gift certificate.
"My prediction is that I will be upset tonight because everything I want to win will not," said NRT member Jeremy Owens (junior-physics) who dreams of attending the Academy Awards as a director.
Best Dressed awards were also given out to Kushner and Jessica Seraphin (junior-secondary education).
'The Oscars are traditionally an event filled with glamour, so I decided to continue that tradition," said Jared Cram (senior-finance). Cram, who was in charge of security for the event, came in a tuxedo.
Sarah Buchanan(senior-art education) also dressed up and said it's the best way to watch the Oscars. "You kind of feel like you're one of the stars."
