Housing improvements make life better at PSU
In response to "Housing improvements are not always needed," the author's comment that the nation is experiencing a decline in the economy doesn't negate the fact that students still have to live and eat on university campuses. As a third-year Penn Stater who has lived on campus the entire time, I feel spending money on renovating the dining commons and allotting more money to Residence Life are great ideas because improving these things can greatly enhance the quality of life for many students. Even though the nation is experiencing economic troubles, I still want to enjoy my college years. And I want the places where I spend a good portion of my out-of-class time to be the best they can be. If that means spending a few more dollars, then so be it. In fact, according to a recent compilation of room and board rates by Indiana University, in-state residents paid $5,300 to live and eat on this campus. A rate that falls mid price range for the Big Ten schools, which can cost students from $5,000 to $7,000 for room and board. So don't complain; we could be paying thousands more to live in Happy Valley. Plus, in the long run, a few hundred dollars isn't much. So the next time you eat on campus or attend a Residence Life-sponsored event, remember we get a lot for the money we are paying and the new rate hike will be well worth the improvements to come.
