As a movie reviewer, I'm always up for a free film. Contrary to popular belief, the Collegian's movie reviewers pay for the theater admissions to the films they review.
You do the math one matinee movie ticket could buy two Café teas on a Friday afternoon.
So when Penn State's Network Event Theater was having a free preview screening of Sorority Boys, I jumped at the chance to review it.
Unfortunately, the extra five dollars I had in my pocket couldn't save this movie from a bad review.
Sorority Boys tells the story of three fraternity brothers of the Kappa Omicron Kappa house or KOK house. The brothers are framed and accused of stealing money from the fraternity and are thrown out.
With no place to live and no money, they decide to join a sorority for the free room and board. They join Delta Omicron Gamma sorority or DOG. The guys' plan goes well until Dave (Watson) falls for one of his sorority sisters. Dave then must decide whether to reveal his true identity.
Barry Watson, Michael Rosenbaum and Harland Williams play the brothers. Tommy Cole, the make-up artist who transformed Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari into women on the 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies, transformed them into women.
I was unimpressed with the Greek acronyms, the story line of the film and the stereotypes that blanketed the film.
Overall, I didn't think the movie was funny. There were a few humorous moments when the guys struggled with the day-to-day life of a woman. Some audience members might disagree with me for much of the movie, the audience broke into hysterical laughter.
There's a lot of slapstick comedy in this film. I don't find a guy in heels falling on his face funny; if you do, this film is for you. It opens tomorrow night. I'll spare myself a second viewing of Sorority Boys and go to the Café instead.
