Letter to the Editor
Worker finds etiquette lacking in dining halls

I work at Redifer Commons. I would really like my job if it weren't for these really annoying things I have to deal with every day: students. Now, I'm not saying all Penn State students who come through the commons bother me. In fact, most don't, but there are enough of you to prompt my commons etiquette lesson, so here goes:

I am a student. I have a long day of classes just like you do, homework and finals, too. However, when I see you at dinner, your day is over and mine is only about halfway done. So, if I am not quite as jolly as you are, maybe you know why now.

I am your peer. I am not your slave, your mom or your waiter. I am not working at the commons so that I can meet all of the needs of every student. I do what I can, and what I am paid to do.

This is the big one. If there is a mess or the commons has run out of something, don't blame the workers. Blame yourselves. Wondering why there is ranch dressing in the BBQ sauce? It's probably because the student right in front of you was too lazy to move their bowl to the ranch dressing, and instead dragged the dripping ladle of dressing over all of the other toppings. And why did we run out of bread? Well, more than likely it is because the students before you took three times as much food as they actually ate, leaving you with nothing.

Think about this editorial, consider changing your ways and I will be a happy commons worker, and much more eager to help you out if you need something.
