A female Penn State student reported that she was "touched inappropriately" in the second floor of the Periodicals Section in Pattee Library, Penn State Police Services said yesterday.
The alleged offense occurred at about 3:30 Monday afternoon, Penn State Police Supervisor Thomas Sowerby said.
The suspect was unknown to the victim, he said, and the police department is looking for the man.
The suspect is a white male in his 20s, about 5'8" tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He is of medium build and has blond hair which is medium length, Sowerby said.
"It's an active investigation," Sowerby said. "If this person did this once, he may have done this more than once."
Sowerby said that if there are other victims or witnesses, they could provide additional details and leads for the police investigation.
The woman reported the offense at the Penn State Police station and was not able to provide enough details for a composite sketch, he said.
The incident was initially listed as an indecent assault, but Sowerby said the offense falls into the harassment category.
"I think this is more in line of calling this harassment," Sowerby said.
"She was touched inappropriately," he said. "That's essentially what harassment is."
Police are at the library at different times throughout the day, but do not have a strict schedule requiring an officer to patrol the library, he said.
Instead the police usually come to the library "upon request," he said.
As for this investigation, Sowerby urged anyone with information to contact the department.
"If (anyone) had similar incidents with a person like that we would like them to call us," Sowerby said.
To provide information about the suspect or a similar incident, call the Penn State Police at 863-1111.
