ButtHeads caters to students' vices

Collegian Staff Writer

Students in the mood for a cigarette and a cheap game of pool have a new hangout in State College -- ButtHeads, 231 E. Beaver Ave.

The store, which opened two weeks ago, sells a wide array of tobacco products, ranging from cloves to cherry-flavored cigarettes. For students with urges other than nicotine, ButtHeads sells a number of latex products, including glow in the dark condoms.

There is one pool table in the back of ButtHeads where patrons can lounge, watch television, smoke, and play a game of pool for 75 cents, said Jeff Fastovsky, Buttheads co-owner.

Additionally, a flier for the store advertises an "infamous back room" in the store. However, neither Fastovsky, nor his partner, Michael Fry, would reveal the surprise to The Daily Collegian.

Fastovsky, a Penn State student who is taking the semester off, said the store differs from other State College tobacco and billiards locations in a number of ways.

ButtHeads delivers. Fastovsky said smokers who order food from Penn State Sub Shop, 225 E. Beaver Ave., can also order cigarettes with their meal.

Tony Capaccio, owner of the Penn State Sub Shop, also owns the store with Fastovsky and Fry. Fastovsky also said Buttheads keeps later hours than most other tobacco stores.

Jeff Fastovsky, part owner of ButtHeads, 231 E Beaver Ave., sits in front of a section of the stores' wide selection of cigarettes.

"Most stores who sell smokes have worse hours, so we wanted to have some better hours," Fastovsky said.

On weekends, ButtHeads remains open until 3 a.m., one hour after the bars close. The store closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday.

Fastovsky said the store provides underage students who cannot get into the bars an alternative with a place to play pool.

"Many students at Penn State enjoy playing pool," he said.

"Most pool tables are in bars, so people who are under 21 can't play there."

It was for this reason that Fastovsky's partner, Michael Fry, decided to open the store last semester.

"I have a lot of friends that are under 21, and there was really no place for us to play pool," Fry said. "From there, we decided to do the cigarettes."

Fry said he also saw a "big market" for specialty cigarettes like cloves, which ButtHead sells.

The store opened during spring break, and because most students were away, business for ButtHeads was initially slow, Fastovsky said. Since then, business for the store has picked up, he added.

"It's been better this week," Fry said.

Erica Gollon (sophomore-accounting and international relations) said she enjoys the environment at the new store.

"I've been there a lot," she said.

"You can watch TV, you can play the radio. It's laid back. It's a really nice atmosphere to go hang out in after class."
