Patton Township Police Department arrested Shane P. Monahan of Altoona on felony retail theft charges Sunday after he attempted to remove $3,064.63 worth of merchandise from the K-Mart on Valley Vista Drive.

Monahan was placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $2,500, police said.

The following happened at about 9:50 p.m. Sunday, police said:

Officers observed a suspicious vehicle parked behind K-Mart with the lights turned off. After doing surveillance, officers had a brief interaction with the driver advising the driver to move. As the driver was leaving the parking lot, an employee advised police that the man later identified as Monahan, had attempted to take two bags filled with merchandise out the back door. Police then issued a traffic stop with the suspicious car when the officers saw another male running next to the vehicle, then next to a store. All of the merchandise was recovered.
