Adult entertainment is returning to the State College area.
The End Zone, a nude dance club known for its play on words, will soon be reopening a mile from its original location.
After a hiatus due to Interstate 99 construction that began in 1999, the nightclub opened its adult bookstore on Friday, said Karen Nagle, wife of owner Larry Nagle. The actual club portion of the building, including dance facilities, is not yet completed, she said.
The new seating area will be larger, having two stories, allowing for a bigger stage for the dancers, Karen Nagle said. Tucked back from the traffic on U.S. Route 322, the club now has its own driveway, Lion Lane.
The move also made it possible for the club to expand its parking area, she said.
Enthusiastic about the opening day, she listed some of the items to be sold in the store, such as adult videos, novelties and gifts. Erotic clothing is one item she suspects will be a big seller.
Not impressed with the filthy conditions of most adult boutiques, Karen Nagle said The End Zone will be different.
"It's going to change the way people look at bookstores," she said.
She estimated there will be another three weeks before the completion of the club itself and the opening will follow shortly.
The grand opening, planned for early summer, will feature adult film star Jenna Jameson.
"We met her in Las Vegas. Larry actually broke up a fight another woman tried to hit her," Karen Nagle said.
Gary Cattell, known around campus as the Willard Preacher, criticizes businesses such as The End Zone for the degradation of women.
"When you go to a strip club, or whatever, you're taking something valuable and honorable and dragging it through the gutter," he said. "It's like Hollywood and bad movies. They're at fault for making them. We're at fault for watching them."
Some Penn State students disagree with Cattell.
"You can say it's exploitation of women on one side, but nobody's forcing them. We took my friend for her birthday," Charis Travlos (senior-political science) said.
Lee Showman (senior-management sciences and information systems and international business) has been to Europe three times and says, "There's probably a thousand places like (The End Zone) over there. TV and magazines have nudity it's not taboo."
