Band is far more useful than column portrayed
I am a member of the Pride of the Lions Pep Band, and I am shocked by the lack of respect shown to the band by Mr. Frantz in his column on Tuesday. Along with the inaccurate titles, which Mr. Salensky corrected, you also complained about our music selection. In our folders we have songs such as "Soul Bossa Nova" (the Austin Powers movie theme song), "Jump Jive and Wail," and "Zoot Suit Riot. " We do not get much time to actually play these songs. The only substantial time we get to play is the 15 minutes before and after the game, during both of which not many people are listening. We only get 15 seconds between plays. You hear fight songs a lot because we have shortened versions of them that will fit in those 15 seconds. The time we used to get is taken up by other activities now. Our director gets directions over his headphones as to when we are allowed to play. It's not in our control. We are not Temple; we are Penn State. We are there to entertain the crowd. And with the limited time we actually get to play, I think we generally do a pretty good job. I welcome you, Mr. Frantz, to come and see if you can do any better. Until then, the next time you write a column such as you did on Tuesday, please take care to consider if your opinion is an informed one before the paper goes to press. Amanda James
