Flyers advertising different cable options were mailed to some on-campus students a few weeks ago, raising the question of whether they would even be able to take advantage of the offer.
The flyers, distributed by Adelphia Cable, were sent due to a mistake in the company's mailing list, a representative from Adelphia said.
The option of personalizing cable is still unavailable to students living in the dorms.
At the beginning of the Fall Semester, digital cable and additional cable channels were added to dorms through a partnership between Penn State Housing and the Association of Residence Hall Students.
ARHS President Lauren del Valle said there has been no discussion of personalizing the students' cable choices. Del Valle said most students seem content with the current options.
"Throughout the years I've heard comments about how it would be nice to have channels like HBO," del Valle said, adding that channels such as PSView (Channel 72) provide students with another movie option. "As far as I know, (individual cable) has never been brought up."
Fraser Grigor, assistant director of housing services, said providing each student with a personalized cable television plan would be impractical and difficult.
"That would mean that Adelphia would have to wire each room requesting cable and then take it out when the students leave," he said. "The infrastructure doesn't exist for cable providers to do this."
Aside from the difficulties involved giving students their own cable plans, there would also be an added cost in the bill for the additional service. Grigor estimated the costs of the plan to be $20 to $30 a month per student.
Grigor has not noticed a push from students to have such an option available.
Del Valle also emphasized the impracticality of giving each student personal cable.
"It would probably be a mess as far as housing and telecommunications are concerned," she said. "They just switched over to digital cable and I can only imagine that it would be harder to give each student a separate option."
Cynthia Dicastelnuovo (sophomore-division of undergraduate studies) said while she is satisfied with the current channel lineup, she would be interested if some channels available off campus, such as HBO, were available in the dorms.
She said whether students would subscribe to such a plan would probably depend on the cost.
"I'm pretty happy with it. Since we've gotten the new channels, it's definitely better," she said.
