Penn State sophomore Kelly Mazzante was named to The 2002 Associated Press All-America second-team yesterday. The sophomore standout was joined on the second team by Angie Welle of Iowa State, Stanford's Nicole Powel and Connecticut's Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash.
The Associated Press first-team included Connecticut's Sue Bird, Duke's Alana Beard, Vanderbilt's Chantelle Anderson, Oklahoma's Stacey Dales and Mississippi State's LaToya Thomas.
Mazzante currently leads the nation in scoring at 25.0 points per game and has enjoyed standout season that has saw her break a total of 27 Penn State, Big Ten Conference and opponent records. She has broken Penn State's single-season records for points, three-point field goals and will enter NCAA Tournament play 56 points shy of tying the 17-year old Big Ten single-season scoring record of 855 points established by Northwestern's Anucha Browne during the 1984-85 season.
Mazzante becomes the sixth Lady Lion to earn All-America status and her selection marks the 10th time a Penn State women's basketball player has been so honored.
She is also one of 20 finalists for the Naismith National Player of the Year honor and is one of three finalists for ESPN The Magazine's Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
