The University Park Allocation Committee has run out of its $2.1 million funds for the year.
"We're really happy with the number of groups we were able to fund," said UPAC Chair Jason Lane. "The more students we can help, the better."
UPAC distributes part of the student activity fee and funds from Unions and Student Activities to fund trips, programs and other organizations at University Park.
Last year UPAC exhausted all of its funds in the third week of the second semester.
This year the group allocated $88,000 in the summer of 2001, $371,000 in the fall of 2001, $528,000 in the spring and $1,021,000 for year-round programs.
Half of this money was used to fund programs and travel experiences, supply operating funds, pay for telephones in the HUB-Robeson Center student organization offices and fund various equipment and media needs for more than 175 student organizations.
The other portion of the funds was used to purchase tickets for Center for Performing Arts events, subsidize a large portion of the recreational sports passes, work on the Distinguished Speakers Series and fund all of the movies shown on campus and most of the Late Night Penn State activities.
Lane explained that the committee chooses which projects it is going to fund on a first-come, first-serve basis and it is never concerned about how much money is left when making that decision.
He recommends student groups now go to the Undergraduate Student Government Senate, Association of Residence Hall Students and academic departments for financial assistance.
However, some members of senate said the group does not have a lot of money to allocate at this point in the semester.
"It has been our policy to fund student organizations that have been denied by UPAC," said Town Sen. Mike Gallo. "But it's the end of the year, and we're running low on funds. So now senate might not be able to help groups as much as they'd like."
