Instead of tuition raise, cut down on research
A double digit increase in tuition?! For five years, I heard the same tired old arguments from the university president's office. The fact is that Graham Spanier's office has not been held truly accountable for all the money that comes into the school. What about cutting the fat out of the budget of the school for once? Penn State wastes money. Between the tuition hikes, increased funding over the years, and the "Grand Destiny" endowment program (which raised enough money to fund the armies of a good-sized country), Penn State should have adequate funding. Trust me, soon you will be hearing Spanier's next stage of arguments, which will mostly point to the increased costs of everything under the sun and untrustworthy statistics about how neglected the university is by the state. These arguments consist of a three-pronged attack: a confrontational attitude, telling professors some of the money will go towards upping their petty salaries and telling the students that they get value for their money and should be happy to scrape for more. In reality the vast money that is spent at Penn State comes from the alumni and the students and it should be used primarily for the students it was intended for. Leave researching a better cocoa bean to Nestle and stop gouging the student checkbook for pet projects, insignificant research and over-funding everything but the student curriculum. Timothy S.
