PSU Glee club to bring music across nation

Collegian Staff Writer

While some are lounging on the beach or relaxing at home for spring break, some Penn State students will be singing.

The Penn State Glee Club will be touring next week. The group recently put out a CD.

The club will perform at Purdue University at the Concert for Intercollegiate Men's Choruses and will travel to Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; and Pittsburgh for other concerts.

The newly recorded The Green Album is the club's third album and contains songs from the British Isles, the United States and Penn State. The group puts out an album about once every five years.

Glee Club member Tom Cox said the group is pushing the album across town this time around.

The club will be taking the CD on tour as well as selling it in State College stores, such as the Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., and Mike's Music, 226 E. College Ave.

Club Vice President Brad Shockey said group's songs appeal to a wide audience.

"The CDs are timeless," Shockey said. "They're not associated with any certain period."

The club anticipates that this album will be a success. Members expect to sell a lot of CDs to their friends and family and predict that a lot of alumni who come back to visit Penn State will also buy the recording.

Also, past CDs the group has produced have been successful and the club doesn't expect anything less from this album, President Glenn Davis said.

The group will be promoting the CD and the university while on tour, Davis said.

"We'll be performing and singing for Penn State alumni while promoting Penn State as well," he said.

But it's not all work and no play for the singers over spring break. The club's members are looking forward to performing on the trip as well as their free day when they'll be able to explore Chicago and "kick back," Shockey said.

"We're a fun bunch of guys who like to sing and perform," Davis said.

Cox added, "And we have fun with good results."

The club's members are friends outside the group as well.

"The friendships here go beyond the extent of the group," Shockey said.

Performing for the group is a good experience for the group's members, mostly because of the appreciation and admiration the club has for its director, Bruce Trinkley.

"No director would be as cool and put up with as much," Shockey said.

Trinkley doesn't just direct the group, but also writes some of the music, Shockey said.

All the performances are free over break just like any that the group does on Penn State soil.
