Renowned composer Marvin Hamlisch to perform with local musicians

Collegian Staff Writer

Four Grammys, four Emmys, three Oscars, three Golden Globes, one Tony and one Pulitzer Prize — and most of us still have no clue what Marvin Hamlisch looks like.

But his music speaks louder than his awards.

"Once you start hearing his songs, you'll recognize his work," said Bernie Punt, director of sales and marketing at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Marvin Hamlisch
Time: 8 p.m.
Date: Today
Place: The Bryce Jordan Center
Tickets: Priced at $39.50 and $36.50, tickets are still available.

Tonight, Hamlisch will rummage through a list of award winning compositions to perform: "What I Did for Love" and songs from his Broadway musicals They're Playing Our Song and The Goodbye Girl.

And for the James Bond fans out there, Hamlisch will play his own rendition of "Nobody Does it Better."

Currently, Hamlisch is the pops of both the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra.

But neither will join Hamlisch on stage for this concert.

"We will be using Penn State music students to perform in the orchestra," Punt said. "You have your own peers playing with this award winning performer."

Russell Bloom, manager of music at Penns Woods, selected the faculty graduates and undergraduates who will be featured playing alongside of Hamlisch Friday.

"This is very common across the country with Marvin," Bloom said.

"It's basically a pick up orchestra. It's great experience for our students to play this type of ensemble."

One of those students is Lindsay Schweriner (senior-music), who is already practicing Hamlisch's work for this Friday's concert.

"I just got the book of music. It doesn't seem that difficult — a lot of show tunes," Schweriner said.

"We'll go to The Bryce Jordan Center Friday afternoon for rehearsal and play the show that night."

Hamlisch's also composed the music for the hit Broadway musical, The Sweet Smell of Success, wrote the song "The Way We Were" for the movie Ice Castles, and adapted Scott Joplin's music for the catchy theme song from The Sting, "The Entertainer."

He also served as music director for Barbara Streisand's tour of England and the United States in 1994.

Tickets are available at the Center, Eisenhower Auditorium and select Uni-Marts.

According to Punt, the concert will be set up as a side stage configuration for an "intimate setting."

The show begins at 8 p.m. tonight and will last somewhere between two to three hours into the evening, Punt said.

Unfortunately, Spring Break will shrink the number of Penn State students in the audience, but the show will be a great time for at least one person who will appear at the evening's performance.

"I'm hoping it's gonna be a lot of fun," Schweriner said about participating in the show.

"It's so exciting being in the atmosphere of professional musicians."
