Globetrotters to bring 'basketball buffoonery'
to BJC

Collegian Staff Writer

What does a Harlem Globetrotter do when not pantsing the referee, completing an amazing slam-dunk or throwing water and confetti on the laughing crowd?

Globetrotter Eathan O'Bryant's normal day includes a radio interview promoting a game, a school assembly and an autograph signing at a local Burger King.

"Everyday is a full day for me," he said. "Whatever city we go to, we get out to see the town."

The Globetrotters will get to go out and see State College when they stop at The Bryce Jordan Center on their "Unforgettable 2002 Tour" at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Having played their first game in 1927, The Harlem Globetrotters are unlike any team in basketball history.

They have toured over 115 countries, playing over 22,000 games (winning many more than losing, according to O'Bryant), including both exhibition and competitive games.

According the 2000 "Q" ratings, the Globetrotters are the most popular and liked professional team in the world.

Even though the Globetrotters are known for their uncompromising athletic prowess, they are also the reigning princes of basketball buffoonery.

Take, for example, the common Globetrotter move of placing the ball under the other team's shirt so they get called for travelling. This would be foul play, if it wasn't in such good spirit and entertainment of the crowd.

But the Globetrotters are not all tomfoolery.

Hopefully the Penn State crowd is ready for the basketball handling skills of O'Bryant, which he said are his trademark.

"I do that better than anything else," he said. For example, O'Bryant said that he wears kneepads, and slides down the floor while dribbling the basketball.

The competitive spirit and fun side of the Globetrotters make for great family entertainment, according to O'Bryant.

"Expect to have two hours of fun and laughter. It's a positive experience for the whole family," he said. "They will remember it for the rest of their lives."

O'Bryant was playing college basketball at the University of Nevada when he was invited to go to Globetrotter Camp to try out for the team.

"You don't say no to the Globetrotters, even if you don't know basketball, you know the Globetrotters are the top of the food chain," he said. "Who wouldn't want to do that?"

To play basketball with such a landmark team was a great honor for O'Bryant.

"I was one of the lucky guys who made the team," he said.

Before being a performer, O'Bryant considers himself an athlete, having played basketball through out college and high school.

O'Bryant said he was in State College before, in the first year he played for the Globetrotters.

"I remember it was cold, hopefully it will be warmer this time around." he said.

When asked if the Globetrotters would win against the New York Nationals, at first O'Bryant guaranteed a victory, but took a moment to re-phrase.

"Hopefully we will pull it out," he said while laughing. "If I were a betting man, I'd put money on us."

Reserved tickets for the Globetrotters are $21.50 and $16. Magic Circle seating is also available. Group discounts are available by calling (814) 863-1812. Participating Burger Kings in Pennsylvania will have Burger King discount coupons to the event. Tickets are available at The Bryce Jordan Ticket Center, Eisenhower Auditorium, select Uni-Marts, Commonwealth Campus Ticket Outlets, or by charge at (814) 865-5555, or 800-863-3336 or online at www.bjc.psu.edu.
