Former Penn State wrestling standouts Dick Lemyre and John Fritz will be inducted into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Hall of Fame on Mar. 10. The ceremony for the five-member class of 2002 will be held prior to the final round of the EIWA Championships at Lehigh University. Thad Turner and Harold Masem of Lehigh and Emil Perona of Rutgers will join Lemyre and Fritz.
Lemyre, a 1954 Penn State graduate, was a two-time All-American at 130 pounds, placing third in 1952 and second in 1953. He helped lead the Nittany Lions to their only NCAA title in 1953. He was a co-captain on the 1954 team and finished his career with a 39-3 record.
Fritz, a three-time All-American and former Penn State coach, was the 1975 NCAA Champion at 126 pounds. He captained the team that year and finished with a record of 71-10-4. He ranks third all-time at Penn State in NCAA wins (17) and NCAA winning percentage (85%). He coached the Lions from 1993-98, earning National Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1998, finishing with a record of 87-33-2. He currently serves as the director of athletics and recreation for Penn State's commonwealth campuses.
