Letter to the Editor
Drunk Thon attendees dampened shirts, spirits

This past year I was definitely excited to be participating in Thon again, and after hearing stories of what the operations committee had to do, I was ready for it. I was ready for trash juice, I was ready for dirty bathrooms and I was even ready to empty the feminine waste bins.

Five minutes into my first shift at 1:05 a.m., however, I experienced something I never thought I would have to deal with -- vomit. Vomit on my shirt, on my pants and in my hair. Unfortunately, some young man decided to attend Thon in such an inebriated state that he couldn't help puking on himself and on me.

Luckily I had people to help me clean up and I was able to get a new blue shirt and I didn't let it stop me from doing my job with a smile. Yet that was not the end of my experiences with drunk students throughout the weekend.

During a later shift I was taunted by a drunk belligerent student who claimed I was not picking up trash fast enough to his liking, and even told me I had missed a spot on the mat while mopping -- and yet I did not bother to say anything back. While in his drunken frustration, because he felt that I was not living up to his cleaning expectations, he grabbed my arm with such force that he left a mark for several hours. Luckily I was able to get away from him before he did anything further.

After speaking to my friends that were dancing that weekend, they added that it was really frustrating to see people drunk, either on the floor in the stands, and it was disrespectful to everybody involved in Thon. People should realize the consequences of their actions when they decide to arrive at Thon drunk, lowering the spirits of both the dancers and hard-working committee members.

If you care about the cause enough to show up during the weekend, show some respect for yourself and the dancers and please come sober.
