Alanis' latest should not be swept 'Under Rug'

Collegian Staff Writer

Alanis Morissette is not only making a comeback with her career, but she's doing something a little different this time around with her new album Under Rug Swept.

While the songs on this album still have the edge that made Morissette popular in the first place, she is not nearly as angry as she was in Jagged Little Pill.

In Morissette's second album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, she took a different approach than with Jagged Little Pill. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie may have been a soul-searching experience for Morissette, but turned out as a major disappointment after her first endeavor. However this album, Under Rug Swept, goes back to the Jagged Little Pill style — reinvented. Rather than being angry and hating most, if not all men, Morissette now shows listeners a more independent woman. Her songs talk about choosing the right lover. The first track "21 Things I Want in a Lover" describes the perfect mate in Morissette's eyes. She says in the song, "I figure I can describe it since I have a choice in the matter." Rather than lyrics that play on what she doesn't want, she empowers both men and women not to settle for someone who doesn't meet their standards.

With the single "Hands Clean" already a hit on the charts, it's a certainty that other songs on this album will also get radio play and move their way up on the Top 40 list.

Other songs on the album play on insecurities everyone has, but at the same time aims to instill confidence in the listener. And the tracks that make up this album have a faster beat with only a few slower songs that are not as successful.

Morissette has a distinctive voice that can either sound really good in a song or can be somewhat whiny. Her faster songs incorporate many instruments and her voice is quite powerful and sounds great, but in some of the slower songs her voice is not as ear-pleasing.

The slower songs like "Flinch" tend to drag on and would probably make most listeners skip to the next track. But not all the slow songs are like that. For instance, "That Particular Time" is a moving slow song with beautiful lyrics and a soothing piano accompaniment in the background.

Morissette's lyrics have always been what makes her such a popular artist. Her home-hitting words draw listeners in, even if the sound isn't what they want or expect it to be. Whether she's singing about her own insecurities, past relationships, or anger her lyrics wrap themselves around the issue at hand and deliver a powerful message to the listener.

Listeners of this album should make sure they hear the songs in their entirety before passing judgement on whether or not they like a particular song. Some of the songs start out weak but then get better as they progress.

This album is not Jagged Little Pill, and it's not likely that any album will be as good as her first, but at the same time Under Rug Swept contains many other qualities that make it different and an overall decent album. This album proves that Morissette's career has not died and will not die anytime in the near future.
