NEWS

Dancers in this weekend's dance marathon will have an easier time missing Mass on Sunday and classes on Monday than in years past, thanks to declarations made by two on-campus organizations.

From Oregon State to Rutgers University, colleges across the country have started their own dance marathons in recent years in the spirit of Penn State's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

From the political to the comical, suggestions for next year's Distinguished Speakers Series covered a wide range of issues and disciplines. Names such as Ralph Nader and Conan O'Brien were thrown out during a brainstorming session last night in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium.

After a prolonged discussion regarding pedestrian-traffic safety, State College Borough Council has taken action to improve safety.

The program was Kilbourne's third appearance as a speaker at Penn State, and it was sponsored by the Eating Issues/Body Image Awareness Team and University Health Services. The event was timely, with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week approaching next week.

Children with cancer and their siblings will have the chance to participate in new activities at this weekend's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

With the state and federal governments facing budget shortfalls, financial aid for higher education is one area that could be affected in upcoming budgets.

The hotly contested soft money restriction bill that has reached Capitol Hill could markedly alter the way federal re-election campaigns are financed in future years if passed, political experts at Penn State say.

Dancers and moralers for the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon will use more than their dancing shoes tomorrow.

A group of Vietnam veterans see similarities between some things being said on college campuses throughout the country now and what was being said on them during the Vietnam War.

Some college couples may experience the obstacles of sustaining a long distance relationship. Weekend visits and phone dates can be enough to keep some couples connected, while others might decide to call it quits.

sports

Purdue will host champion hopeful Penn State tonight at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena. The game will be televised locally on WPSX.

The Fighting Illini (20-7, 8-5 Big Ten) opened up the game early on as they went on a 16-0 run to blow open a 4-4 game.

The Blue Hens entered last year's ACHA Div. I national tournament as the No. 9 seed, without much of a chance. Then they proceeded to go all the way to the finals, before falling to the Icers 7-2.

The sophomore guard could be described as energetic, hard working or intense. Maybe the most important word to describe Chambliss to Penn State men's basketball fans is -- three. As in three-pointer.

Several large bodies in the Big Ten have had their way this year while playing Penn State - racking up career highs in points and/or rebounds - and last night was no different in Illinois' 83-56 win over the Nittany Lions.

Penn State men's volleyball player Norm Keil has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division I Player of the Week after recording a perfect hitting percentage and helping the Nittany Lions to a 3-0 record last week.

ARTS

In a storytelling performance last night in the Palmer Museum of Art's Lipcon Auditorium, Steve Thunder-McGuire told his audience that a future bicycle ride across Iceland wouldn't be very long, at least in his opinion.

There's a problem with novellas. If they're done well, you are bound to want more.

Let's face it, there's no ignoring Britney.

No vocal harmonies, no doo-wah's, no parental discretion. But somehow, Fu Manchu carries on the Beach Boys' torch of feel-good-surf-power-pop rock.

There was a time when punk was dirty and loud, when it had an edge that would make anyone over 40 shiver with irritation and rage with a meaningful passion.

Hank Williams III, from the hard-hitting, always-sinning family whose development has paralleled that of the country genre, occupies an odd place in today's music scene.
