Play celebrates women, not a 'hook-up scene

If one views more than five minutes of the Vagina Monologues, one reasons that the monologues are not about genitalia, they a celebration of women and instrumental in increasing awareness of violence against women.

As a cast member, I learned about being a woman, and to be proud of the struggle that earned me the rights I hold dear.

I learned that strength should be a necessary part of a woman's life when faced with adversarial conditions present in society.

I find it ultimately disturbing that Amber Pawlik said the Vagina Monologues promotes a "misguided" view of "sexual/romantic leadership."

If the Vagina Monologues promote anything, it is that women should be empowered enough not to succumb to the "hooking up scene." How is loving yourself "distorted?"

Everyday life is a Penis Monologue. For once, it is refreshing to celebrate women--to stand up for being women. If that means putting a damper on one commercialized holiday, so be it.

Maybe more women should engage in a monologue, a celebration of themselves, of safer sex, of masturbation, so a woman does not need to be reliant on a man to control her happiness.

We should abandon the idea that it takes two to be sexually "healthy," because the woman is subordinate to the man when this particular opinion prevails.
