Letter to the Editor
Blues concert needed more ads to succeed

I am very much aware of the many hassles which individuals and organizations face when planning on campus events here at Penn State.

As such, I share in Mr. Bell's frustration at having planned the 100% Blues concert on Monday evening, only to entertain 30 people.

However, I felt personally offended when Mr. Bell placed blame on the black undergraduate community for such a "disgraceful representation".

Had it not been for my presence in the HUB-Robeson Center last night while the performance was taking place, I would not have known anything about this performance prior to this morning's post-event article in the Collegian.

I do not know if this event was advertised specifically within the English and African-American Studies departments, but I would suggest that where a large target audience for any event is desired, but advertising expenses do not allow for flyers or banners, a simple solution would be to take advantage of the easy access to organization list-serves. Also, if commitment to cultural enrichment was sought, why was it relevant to cite the proportion of black people present at the show on Monday night?

It appears to me that lack of proper marketing; advertising in particular, not lack of interest by any segment of the Penn State student body would be to blame for the relative failure of this event.
