Usually an 11-4 home victory brings smiles, hugs and post-game snacks. But after the Penn State Lady Icers (19-5-1) dismantled Rochester (2-7) on Saturday night at the Greenberg Sports Complex, the Lady Icers were anything but pleased.
"It seemed like people came out and didn't give 100 percent because it didn't take 100 percent for the win," senior Andrea Lavelle said.
"We need to go in every game pretending it's nationals."
After battling through a wicked schedule over the past 10 games with an 8-1-1 record and earning a berth to the national tournament in Atlanta two weeks from now, an inexperienced Rochester team limped into town with a 2-6 record.
The same Rochester lineup that Penn State ruined 17-1 earlier this season.
"It's tough to get really pumped up when you're playing a team you know you're going to kill," Lavelle, who scored seven goals against Richmond, said.
Assistant captain Lauren Shaw scored the first goal of the evening when she ricocheted a puck post to post past Rochester goalie Awista Ayub.
The puck bounced off the left post, into the top post, and behind Ayub's backside into the net.
The score was Shaw's sixth consecutive post goal.
"Don't believe the myths," Shaw said. "The post is a shooter's friend, not enemy."
In the third period, Penn State captain Jen McDevitt scored her first goal since November on a rebound slap shot.
The goal was the first of two by the junior, and it put Penn State ahead, giving the team a comfortable lead with a score of 8-3.
McDevitt, a defender up until this season, has filled in admirably for injured goalie Jessica Gurskey since November. After posting a 10-2-1 record in between the posts, McDevitt deserved a night out of net.
Freshmen Kristen Petricelli relieved her of the duties.
"All I wanted to do was skate and play hard," McDevitt said.
"The two goals were an added bonus.
Lavelle scored the smoothest goal of the night when she put the puck through one defender's leg, shimmied past another with a quick stutter and flipped in the puck to put Penn State ahead 9-3.
Lavelle also added two assists to her seven goals, while sophomore Alex McVicker contributed with a goal, four assists and a nasty check at the end of the contest that brought a chorus of "Woos" from Penn State's crowd. Rochester's Kate Donhauser scored a hat trick.
Penn State's disappointment after the 11-4 victory could be interpreted as hunger.
Although the Lady Icers were not as dominant as they were in past showings, Penn State still cashed in another convincing win to the bank.
It is apparent from their words that this team expects the best, and is striving toward being the best for the rest of the season.
"I know we have the hunger and ability to win nationals," Shaw said.
The Lady Icers were slated to play Rhode Island at home next weekend, but Rhode Island will be unable to make the trip.
The Lady Icers are working to get somebody into town to take on Penn State before nationals. The Syracuse Warriors adult club team is one possibility.
