Two Big Ten foes meet wrestlers this weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

After wrestling two top five teams last weekend, this weekend can be seen as a walk in the park.

The Penn State (5-9, 2-3 Big Ten) wrestling team travels to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 4 Ohio State (18-3, 3-2) on Saturday at noon.

Then the Nittany Lions return home the following day to take on No. 20 Michigan State (4-8, 1-3) at Rec Hall at 1 p.m.

For the third consecutive dual meet, the Nittany Lions wrestle a top five team.

The Buckeyes recent success this season is partly because of an outstanding recruiting class three years ago, coming of age.

This recruiting class includes No. 2 Tommy Rowlands, No. 7 John Clark and 125-pounder Jesse Leng, all talented wrestlers.

"They're a solid young team, that one class is really paying dividends for them," Penn State coach Troy Sunderland said.

"Fortunate for them they haven't had any significant injuries or transfers."

Ohio State coach Russ Hellickson notched his 300th win of his career early this year in just his 16 season of coaching but has not ever been worried about his win-loss record.

"I never worry about wins and losses, I never have," Hellickson said.

"If I worried about that, I would never schedule the way I do. I learned a long time ago that it's not about me, but the kids.

Coaching is always about the kids, especially when you have been around as long as I have. Coach Paterno, up there, exemplifies being about the kids."

The marquee match up will take place at 141 pounds between No. 6 Robert Sessley and the Lions' Scott Moore.

When Michigan State invades State College, Penn State will be trying to win their first home meet since Jan. 27 against Indiana.

The Spartans have seen their share of injuries this year. In December, Nik Fekete was lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

A week and a half-ago, Gray Maynard broke his hand and missed a pair of dual meets last weekend.

Michigan State coach Tom Minkel expects Maynard will be healthy enough to compete in his match this weekend.

Minkel knows that just because Penn State is not ranked his team will still need a strong performance turned in to get the victory.

"We need to wrestle well in every weight class," he said.

"They have some very good kids, and we are beat up a little, we just can't give up the big points."

The Spartans' Rashad Evans looked to have turned the corner last weekend against two Big 12 ranked opponents.

He defeated Oklahoma State's Willie Gruenwald in overtime, and beat Missouri's No. 10 John Kopnisky, 5-4. Minkel knew it was a matter of time before Evans would break out.

"He's been developing a little more every week," he said. "He's been making progress in the room and this week it finally paid off."

Easier than last weekend, but the Lions will still be tested this weekend by a pair of ranked teams.
