The Penn State Lady Icers have a little touching up to do before they can bring their best shimmy to the big dance.
After locking up a bid to the national tournament last weekend, the Lady Icers will see the University of Rochester (2-6) tomorrow night at 10:15 at the Greenberg Sports Complex. But don't expect the Lady Icers to turn it down a notch just because they have secured a part in postseason play.
"No we're not letting anything down," freshman Kristen Reed said. "We don't give up."
The Lady Icers will be hitting the home ice for the first time in 43 days, and the Ice Pavilion should be a house of pain working in Penn State's favor tomorrow night. A late start brings with it a denser, rowdier crowd than usual.
"We only have three games left at home," senior Andrea Lavelle said. "I love playing at home. We're crowd pleasers."
The Lady Icers have put on two of their most electrifying shows of the season at 10:15 p.m. start times. A 6-0 win over Buffalo resulting in a bench-clearing brawl and a wave of euphoria throughout the Ice Pavilion crowd along with an 8-7 win over Pittsburgh that went down to the final ticks were both epic battles waged at 10:15 p.m.
Rochester is a youngblood to club hockey, as senior goalie Awista Ayub just recently established the team in 1999. Ayub is the centerpiece of a rather inexperienced unit just learning the sport of hockey.
"They are an unexperienced team with an experienced goalie," Penn State assistant captain Lauren Shaw said.
Penn State toyed with Rochester earlier this season in a Nov. 10 matchup resulting in a 17-1 Penn State walkaway. In that game the stellar goalie Ayub was bombarded with shot after shot, resulting in the lopsided digit on the scoreboard.
With nationals just a couple weeks away, this weekend's contest will primarily be a chance for the Lady Icers to focus on sharpening their skills for the playoffs.
"For nationals we know we have the raw skill to take the trophy but what we need is the system and strategy to secure it," Shaw said. "We're working on having complete control of the offensive, defensive and neutral zones. If we own all three, we own the ice."
Going against a solid goalie like Ayub this weekend will bring the Lady Icers a good opportunity to work on their shooting skills.
"We're looking to work on more technical skills and get those down pat and ready for nationals," Reed said.
