While I appreciate logical arguments concerning an issue from several perspectives, the idea of 'Freeing Cupid' from feminist groups that have turned Valentine's Day into an opportunity to "promote female victimology and tedious performances of the Vagina Monologues" is unfounded and ludicrous. V-Day, a conception of the playwright Eve Ensler, promotes awareness of human rights violations specifically targeted against women and girls worldwide.
To say that an attempt at preventing such acts of violence degrades romance on a national, over-commercialized holiday debases any argument, whether well-thought or otherwise. I plan on celebrating Valentine's Day with my boyfriend, while seeing a performance of the Vagina Monologues with girlfriends on Friday. Ads such as the one by the 'SheThinks' organization cannot classify me--or any woman with a brain--into an archaic stereotype no matter how much propaganda they chose to sponsor. I have two words for 'SheThinks': enlighten up.
