Do you spend your weekends trying to immerse yourself in the arts?
Well, tomorrow the HUB-Robeson Center will provide a haven for you searchers.
The Arts Council will be sponsoring their first event this weekend, featuring performances from seven on-campus arts groups: No Refund Theatre, The Penn State Thespians, International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE), Problem Child, Singing Lions, Volé: the Penn State Ballet Club and Orchesis.
Nearly 50 people will be performing between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. on the ground floor of the HUB-Robeson Center. Each group is allotted 20 to 30 minutes for its members to perform.
Mike Still (junior-political science and philosophy), the president of NRT, and Christyn Rossman (senior-marketing), the president of the Penn State Thespians, created the Council.
"It started from a need to increase communication and interaction between arts groups on campus," said Rossman.
"We (Rossman and Still) shared an office but we'd never met each other, which we found really odd since we were both presidents of different arts groups on campus. I realized that we didn't know a lot about other arts groups, except for the nights when we were competing against them," she said.
This particular event offers a variety of different art related performances. The Thespians will perform songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, which they will present at Schwab Auditorium next month. IAJE will have a jazz session and Problem Child will have members read from their favorite works for several minutes. Volé and Orchesis will do dance numbers.
Rob Borger (junior-music education), former president of IAJE, will be performing tomorrow and feels that the ideas of the Arts Council are very positive for the arts.
"It's a really good idea because it brings all of our resources together, instead of all being separate, and it gives people searching for arts a place to go since you don't really know what's going on unless you really look, and this is a great place to find it."
Rossman hopes the Council will continue to bring groups closer together, and said that someday they hope to create a show that incorporates all performers from all arts groups. She also said they plan to put on shows for community service in the future.
Still hopes that tomorrow night's event will "foster more communication and interaction between arts groups on campus."
