Penn State men's soccer senior Chris Stout was honored as the 2001 Jeffrey Award winner at the team's annual banquet. The award is given to the Penn State player that exemplifies what a true Penn State soccer ambassador should do on and off the field, and is named after the legendary Nittany Lion head coach Bill Jeffrey.
Stout played in 68 games as a Nittany Lion after walking on to the team his freshman year. His solid contributions to the team helped lead the squad to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a third-round advancement his senior season. He recorded five goals and two assists for 12 points as a four-year Penn State defender, and this past season was an integral member of the stingy Nittany Lion defense that only allowed 16 goals and 123 shots through 20 games.
Penn State's most valuable player is awarded with the Bill Jeffrey Award. Jeffrey, who died in 1966, coached Penn State from 1926 to 1952 and was one of the nation's most successful collegiate coaches. The legendary coach ended his career with a 153-24-29 record and was the leader of the historic trip made by the Penn State men's soccer team to Iran as a goodwill mission in 1951. Beginning in 1962, the presentation of the Most Valuable Player award was declared the Bill Jeffrey Award.
