This year, Penn Staters will get to view Cassidy's updated version of his play, entitled The Penis Monologues II: The Second Coming. The show is being put on by The Outlaws, a Penn State's student-run drama group, today at 11:15 p.m. in 119 Arts Building.
"We are not trying to poke fun at feminism or The Vagina Monologues at all," said Rob Campbell (junior- theatre), producer of the show. "While The Vagina Monologues celebrates vaginas, The Penis Monologues celebrates penises. It's all penis, all the time."
Students who still want to see the sold-out Vagina Monologues before catching The Penis Monologues can arrive at 100 Thomas tonight before the show and hope to grab one of the general admission seats.
The Penis Monologues consists of more than a dozen one- to two-minute monologues in which men discuss topics such as size, functionality, masturbation, the "Irish curse" and much more. The show will last about 30 minutes.
Cassidy cleared up any concerns for those who have not yet seen The Vaginia Monologues. "You do not have to know The Vagina Monologues to understand The Penis Monologues."
For some of the actors, The Penis Monologues will be their "first time" performing with the Outlaws.
"It's my first experience under Outlaws' umbrella," Derek Snyder (freshman-theatre) said. "I've been intrigued, surprised, embarrassed and humored. All in all, it was much more fun than I thought it would be."
The play is directed by Melissa Osborne (freshman-theatre) and Kelly Haney (sophomore-English and theatre), both of which enjoyed working on the show.
"Outlaws is a great opportunity to experience and try new theatrical ideas," Haney said. "For example, I never thought I'd be directing a show where eight men talk about their penises."
Osborne agreed that directing the play was a bizarre, yet fun time. "It's interesting being a girl and directing this play, but it's still a good way to spend your Valentine's Day, surrounded by boys."
The Penis Monologues II: The Second Coming is a free production. Seating is limited, however, so the Outlaws urge students to get there early.
