Penn State men's soccer players Derek Potteiger and Ricardo Villar were chosen in the 2002 Major League Soccer Super Draft, held this past Sunday. Potteiger was chosen in the fourth round (41st overall) by the New England Revolution while Villar was picked up by the Dallas Burn in the fifth round (55th overall). Chris Gbandi, a defender from UConn, was the first overall pick of the draft.
Potteiger, who started every game of his collegiate career, was named a 2001 All-America selection. A Verizon Academic All-District selection, he helped lead his team to the third round of the NCAA Tournament where the Lions fell to St. John's in triple overtime. Potteiger finished his Penn State career tied for ninth on the Nittany Lion all-time assist list (19) and this past season ranked second on the team in assists with seven. The tri-captain was also named first team All-Big Ten for the third-straight season.
Villar finished his Penn State career second on the all-time assist list with 31. He started every game of his senior campaign and led Penn State in almost every statistical category, including goals (10), assists (13) and game-winning goals (4). He was named as one of
Soccer America's 11 College Most Valuable Players, and also received first team All-America and unanimous first team all-Big Ten accolades.
