New elections rules defeat purpose of code

We are writing in concern for the new elections code for the USG/UPAC/ARHS elections. Shortening the campaign period not only reduces visibility of the candidates, but also lessens the value of the Undergraduate Student Government by not allowing enough time for the issues and platforms to be discussed so that a voter can make an educated decision. This, and limiting in-person voting to the HUB, leads to a diminished voter turnout and a governmental structure with less of a chance of being a truly representative body.

The effort to reduce spending is one that should be recognized, but the creators of the code should realize you also reduced the time; so proportionately the spending is the same.

If the elections are an "imposition on students," why create a bigger imposition by not having regulations on fliers? Eradicating flier regulations opens the arena for dirty politics and permits less credibility. Do we really want more drama in our student government?

We wish the USG senators who re-wrote the Elections Code read the detailed recommendations left by last year's commissioners. There is much to be said about experience. The elections code should not be modified annually to suit those who think about running, but be set for precedence so the code is followed to assure a fair, college election.
