Senator responds to committee allegations

I am absolutely appalled at the recent opinion column by Terrell Jones.

Throughout his entire column, Jones barely touched upon the entire heart of the controversy: the classification of documents dealing with the university's progress towards fulfilling the Framework to Foster Diversity.

Instead, Jones decided to use misdirection to try and change the issue instead towards the supposed lack of diversity on the Senate Diversity Committee. Every single student at this university deserves to see exactly what progress is being made towards diversity. Jones and other administrators signed an agreement with the Black Caucus last spring, and as a representative of those students and all the other students at this campus, I am bound and determined to bring every shred of evidence to light regarding this issue. I don't want to see some distilled, edited and polished report handed down from on high at Old Main.

Further, the statement that the USG definition of diversity is secret is an outright lie. This definition is publicly available and is being used by Faculty Senate in its analysis of diversity focused classes. And for an administrator at this university to infer that members of senate are racist and have deliberately tried to keep certain members of the student population off of the Diversity Committee is irresponsible and unprofessional. Senator Michaels has made every attempt at including other student groups in the diversity process, including members of the Muslim Student Association, who spoke to our committee regarding issues they are facing after Sept. 11.

Jones' behavior is reprehensible from someone who should have the best interest of students in mind.

Richard J. Smith
USG Town Senator and USG Senate Diversity Committee member
