The tag line for the movie Slackers is "higher education just hit a new low." I would revise this statement to "filmmaking just hit a new low."
I know a chick flick when I see one; I also know a guy movie. Slackers is an attempt at a guy movie that can't measure up to its more popular sub-genre successes such as American Pie and Road Trip. Quite frankly, Slackers is a waste of time and five bucks.
Slackers tells the story -- well, attempts to tell the story -- of three college buddies 48 days from their graduation. The guys are not really slackers at all, they work very hard throughout their college career at one thing -- cheating.
The three were on their way to graduating when the school's psychotic, obsessive nerd, Ethan (Jason Schwartzman) foils their plan and blackmails them into helping him. Ethan wants a woman; he wants Angela (James King). Ethan shows his love by stalking her.
The guys help him until Dave (Devon Sawa) falls for Angela and realizes how dangerous Ethan is. In a twist of fate at the end of this pointless story, the cheaters win and the psychos end up working at Lenny's (you can figure out the word-play here). The film's one redeeming factor is Schwartzman (Rushmore). His character may be sick and weird in the film, but he pulls it off frighteningly well.
Overall the story is weak, the film itself is sloppy and the comedic moments garnered few laughs from the audience. There is no reason why anyone should see this film -- especially with quality films like Black Hawk Down and The Royal Tenenbaums in the theaters now.
