Letter to the Editor
International groups hurt by lack of warning

According to the Collegian's Wednesday article regarding the new HUB rules that have thwarted this year's International Food Fair, Curt Speaker, a Penn State officer who helped develop these rules, "did not intend to interrupt the activities of student groups." He declares, "(t)o be honest ... it didn't cross my mind."

This lack of thought is precisely the problem. The statement shows clearly that international student activities are not even a consideration in decision making by the Penn State bureaucracy. It shows how our activities are at the margins of the university administration's concerns, in spite of the administration's discourse of embracing cultural diversity. I lament that, in spite of the effort of various international student organizations, the importance of cultural activities involving world cuisines does not even "cross the mind" of any administrator involved in making these decisions.

We hope that in the future they will be more concerned with the students' interests and will effectively support, rather than thoughtlessly disrupt, our efforts to share our worlds and cultures with others.
