Komlev earns revenge during trip to Mansfield

For Alex Komlev, retribution for an early-season loss came this weekend when the Penn State boxing team competed at Mansfield University.

Komlev and the team took to the ring for the first time this season on Saturday, with six fighters participating in the Mansfield Invitational.

Featured among the bouts was the rematch between national champions Commanche Garcia of Lock Haven and Komlev at 156 pounds.

At the Penn State Invitational on Dec. 1, Komlev lost his only match of the season to Garcia, three rounds to none. During that fight, Komlev was guilty of not throwing enough punches and getting caught by some hard power shots.

At Mansfield, Komlev decidedly outboxed Garcia, taking the bout by decision, 2-1. Using his jab and throwing a lot of punches right up the middle, Komlev kept his opponent frustrated and guessing for all three rounds.

Miles Rivas, another veteran, looked superb in his dismantling of Lock Haven's John Pax.

Using all the punches in his repertoire, Rivas fought his best fight of the year, leaving Pax unable to answer the bell for the third round.

In other matches, Matt Haley and Paul Falco threw their first punches for Penn State boxing. Haley won 3-0 against VMI's Tim Robbins at 147 pounds, using his jab and pivots to dominate.

At 195 pounds, Falco's strong third round couldn't pull him out of a two-round hole, and he lost to Spencer Holmes of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The team will be in action this weekend, traveling to the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday.
