'Be good to each other,' comedian tells audience

Collegian Staff Writer

Two massive, yet organized lines of students waited impatiently last night outside of Eisenhower Auditorium an hour before Dave Chappelle was supposed to take the stage.

When the doors opened 20 minutes later, all order broke down as a stampede of students rushed the glass doors.

It was almost 9 p.m., an hour after the show was supposed to start, when the lights finally dimmed and the jam-packed auditorium roared with anticipation. A moment later, a man strolled out casually onto the stage.

When the audience realized that it was not Dave Chappelle, the room filled with boos. Instead, it was Greer Barnes, the warm-up act.

A few minutes later, Chappelle took the stage amidst cheering and screams.

"You guys are nestled up in the middle of nowhere," Chappelle exclaimed, explaining why he was so late.

After making fun of how out of the way University Park is, Chappelle dived into a tirade about the Ku Klux Klan and how he wasn't "a fan of their work."

Following a story about how his family once tricked the Klan with some nougat filling from candy, he went off on a tangent about where nougat came from, leaving a dirty image of Willy Wonka's "oompa loompas" on the audience's mind.

Chappelle tackled plenty of topical and controversial issues throughout the night including Enron, anthrax, marijuana and ethnic stereotypes.

At one point, he interrupted his own act when he noticed a student videotaping his performance. Chappelle stopped, sat down and refused to tell another joke until the student came up and gave him the tape. After much coercion from both Chappelle and the audience, the student finally came forward and turned over the tape to the comedian.

"Man, if you had brought up the video camera with the tape, I was going to give you a special message," Chappelle joked. He then went on a spontaneous rant about pirating and "raging against the machine," telling the audience that he actually promoted it. He jokingly told the crowd that if they saw a pirated version of the movie Half-Baked to steal it.

Right before he left the stage, Chappelle reiterated that he was not upset with the student who had attempted videotape the act. He just had one piece of advice for everyone to keep in mind: "If you're going to fight the machine, just remember to be good to each other."
