Three arraigned in Ecstasy drug ring

Collegian Staff Writer

Three former Penn State students were arraigned yesterday on charges that link them to a drug ring suspected of distributing an estimated 98,000 Ecstasy pills and 56 ounces of cocaine in State College and through the fraternity system.

David Apple, 23, David Caris, 24, and Alan Trub, 24, were charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy. Apple and Caris were also charged with delivery of a controlled substance -- Apple on marijuana charges and Caris on Ecstasy charges.

Trub, an August 2000 graduate, was listed in the police report as receiving weekly deliveries of 150 to 200 pills of Ecstasy and about one ounce of cocaine to his address at Beta Sigma Beta, 255 E. Fairmount Ave.

These deliveries were made during the 1998 to 1999 school year, and are connected in the report to two other former Penn State students, Oleg "Alex" Logatchev and Jeremy Crouse, both indicted on federal drug charges last week.

Logatchev and Crouse allegedly trafficked an estimated $2 million of Ecstasy into the State College area during 1998 and 1999, and were indicted in Pittsburgh on charges of conspiring to distribute the drug in western Pennsylvania from June 1998 to December 2001.

After these two men were indicted in Pittsburgh with a group of four others, the Centre County Drug Task Force started making arrests of 12 other suspects involved with the State College branch of this alleged drug operation.

Trub's arraignment, along with Apple and Caris', mark four arraignments in this case so far.

The Friday arraignments of Scott Aronson and Jonathan Branam on recent cocaine charges were not related to this larger investigation, Sgt. Dana Leonard said.

"We've only had four arraignments in regards to this case," Leonard said.

Apple, an August 2001 graduate, is charged with selling one-quarter pound of marijuana along with another suspect, according to court documents.

In June 1999, Apple and the suspect charged $350 for the marijuana sale at 817 W. College Ave., according to the documents.

During that same month, Caris allegedly delivered 10 pills of Ecstasy at a $300 charge, according to the documents. Caris is also suspected of receiving about 10 deliveries of 50 to 100 Ecstasy pills beginning that June, court documents said.

The first of the 12 Centre County suspects was arraigned in State College last Wednesday. Jacob Rosen, a December 2000 graduate, was detained in Pittsburgh when the six were indicted on federal charges. Rosen was arrested on charges of possession with intent to deliver Ecstasy and cocaine, and criminal conspiracy for his involvement with the suspected drug ring.

During the 1998 to 1999 school year, Rosen was allegedly receiving weekly deliveries of about 400 pills of Ecstasy and four to five ounces of cocaine at his Pi Lambda Phi address. These numbers are said to have doubled during the Spring Semester of that year, according to court documents.

As for the remaining eight suspects, the police said a few of their lawyers have been contacted already.

"We've been in contact with attorneys for another three or four of them," Leonard said.

He said the police expect to have four more suspects arraigned this week.
