The men's boxing team will put its gloves on tomorrow afternoon at Mansfield University for the first time since last year. The Mansfield Invitational will feature seven Penn State boxers, and include fighters from five different schools overall.
Highlighting the event will be a rematch between the Nittany Lion's defending national champion Alex Komlev and Commanche Garcia of Lock Haven at 156 pounds. In their previous meeting at the Penn State Open in December, Komlev was guilty of not using his jab and not punching enough in a match he lost three rounds to none.
Komlev will have to adjust his style if he is to avenge his beating at the hands of Garcia.
"If I do everything I was supposed to the first time we fought, I'll be all right," Komlev said.
While many fighters will get their first in-ring experience of the season tomorrow, Miles Rivas and Patrick Sullivan will join Komlev as the veterans looking to give confidence to the unexperienced boxers. With the regional tournament coming up in March, the young fighters need to get at least one bout under their belt to qualify.
