Michigan road swing test for Icers

Collegian Staff Writer

Last time they were angry, this time they are just confident.

In their last meeting with No. 3 Eastern Michigan (18-7-2) the ACHA Div. I Icers (19-1-1) were coming off their only loss of the year, and the Eagles were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. This weekend the No. 1 Icers will make the trip up to Michigan to play the Eagles tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. (the game can be heard on 90.7-WKPS). They are coming off possibly their best win of the year against No. 3 Iowa State, raising their current winning streak to 10 games.

"The guys felt very good about the win," head coach Joe Battista said. "We are confident, and happy we won, but it is behind us."

The Icers have no choice but to put their Nittany Lion Invitational win behind them, in order to avoid an upset against not only the Eagles, but No. 10 Michigan Dearborn (10-13-4), which the Icers will face tonight at 7:30.

"This is going to be a tough weekend," defenseman Josh Mandel said. "It is going to be a battle."

However, if the Icers dominate both teams they way they did earlier in the season, the real battle could be for over who gets the window seats on the bus.

On Nov. 9 and 10, the Icers crushed the Wolves by a combined 15-3 margin in two games. They followed that up with a 9-0 blanking in two contests against the Eagles on the 30 and Dec. 1.

However, being shut out on back-to-back days has only prepared the Eagles for this weekend's showdown.

"Nobody has given them a challenge," Eagles head coach Paul Fassbender said. "I think we can give them a challenge."

While the Eagles may be confident, the Icers are beaming with it.

"I think it is going to be tough," forward Kevin Jaeger said. "But I do not think either of these teams are as good as Iowa State."

While, neither team might be as talented, both the Wolves and Eagles have a couple of things going for them this weekend.

The Eagles have the advantage over the Icers in the fact that they play on Olympic ice; the Icers do not have that luxury to even prepare for it.

However, the fact the Eagles only netted two goals on 70 shots last weekend, could take away the home ice advantage, especially if both Scott Graham and Geoff Beauparlant continue their success in net. They are both expected to see ice time this weekend.

After countless line changes, it appeared the Icers had finally found the right combinations by moving Jaeger to the red line and Joe McArdle to the black line along with Kyle Jordan. However, injuries may force Battista to shuffle at least two of his lines, hoping to keep the red line in tack.

A number of key personnel have missed practice this week including co-captain Jordan and McArdle, who are both listed as questionable. Although forward Robert Pate has been practicing with the team, he has not been cleared to play. Fellow forward Jack Weber is also out for the remainder of the season.

"We have to rely on our depth," Battista said

Depth Battista hopes he can ride through their toughest stretch of the season, facing six straight teams ranked in the top 10. However, ranking has not seemed to scare off the Icers this year.

Holding a 13-0-1 record against top 10 competition. They look to not only raise their league-best mark to 15-0-1, but also sweep the season series against both Michigan Dearborn and Eastern Michigan this weekend.
