Giving Chase's Mike Woliansky and Ryan Wilcox like to play fast, and they like to play loud and they like to leave audiences exhausted after every performance. Their fans wouldn't have it any other way.
"We're fun on stage," Wilcox said. "We're going to go all out. I'll probably leave the stage either bloody or passed out. Both would be optimal."
While Wilcox's aims are rather personal, Woliansky said everything is secondary to Giving Chase's primary goal.
"The goal of this band is to put out as much energy into the crowd as we can," Woliansky said. "If you put the energy into the crowd it tends to bounce back onto the stage and into your performance."
Giving Chase, a local melodic punk band, will perform at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the HUB's Heritage Hall, along with Keepsake, Hot Rod Circuit, Tabula Rasa and Short Side.
Hot Rod Circuit, arguably the biggest name on the bill, last played State College in 2000, when the band opened for Weston. Wilcox said Hot Rod Circuit will likely satisfy anyone who attends tomorrow's show.
"I've seen Hot Rod Circuit and they're really fun," he said. "They just bring so much energy to every show."
Hot Rod Circuit explores the same melodic punk sound as Giving Chase. Keepsake, the show's other headliner, takes its sound in a different direction, Woliansky said.
"Keepsake used to be a hardcore/pop-punk band," he said. "But they've phased out the hardcore and gone in a New Found Glory-type of direction. It's cool."
Tomorrow's show is the second for Giving Chase this week -- the band played Wednesday at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave. -- but until recently Woliansky and Wilcox haven't had many chances to pump up a crowd. As a result, they expect tomorrow's show to be especially intense.
"We haven't played in five months," Wilcox said, "and we haven't played in State College in about seven, so there's a lot of pent up energy. We're about ready to explode."
Giving Chase, which Woliansky compared to Face to Face, Lifetime, the Get Up Kids and Jawbreaker, has existed under various names and lineups. Wilcox thinks this latest incarnation is the best.
"We've been together with so many members, it seems like forever," he said. "But it seems right this time."
While the band hasn't played in the area recently, Woliansky said Giving Chase has been active in State College in the past.
"We played about two years ago with a couple bands in the (HUB) ballroom before it was redesigned," he said. "We've played at the Crowbar. We played the Co-op, the VFW. There aren't always a lot of shows in State College, but we try."
Woliansky said Giving Chase has not played with any of the other bands on the bill, but that he is a fan of each of the bands.
The show has been put together by the Asylum, an organization that sponsors punk and hardcore shows on campus. Attendance is free to all students.
