Bike riders need to be aware of inflated tickets
I realize that bike riders need to obey the laws of the road. That does not mean we, however, should be taken advantage of with outrageous ticket prices. I received a $64 ticket for a bicycle violation, which I assume has been standard practice in the borough. The borough needs to learn the value of warnings, but I guess warnings won't help to pay for their ridiculously large police station. With a little bit of research, I found that the fine I received should have been $10 dollars. On my court date, I got my fine reduced to $10 dollars, but still had to pay $39 dollars in court fees. Is there something wrong with this? How many people have paid this same fine and not researched it like i did? State College must be more regulated than any other town in America. For those of you who ride bikes, if you receive a bike fine in the borough, it should be $10 dollars or written up as law 3505. If you receive a $64 dollar ticket, than there are added costs that don't belong on your ticket. Remember to resolve this issue before you sign the ticket, otherwise you may have to waste money on court fees. Always research your tickets, it could mean the difference between $64 dollars and $10. But really, is it more effective to give out two tickets, or 10 warnings? Well, at least I made the police officer who stopped me come to court on his day off. Christian Engdahl
